The ABC’s of a DMC

This article highlights the primary aspects of what a Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) is, when this type of committee might be involved with a clinical trial, and who the members should be. There are a number of reasons a DMC might involved with a clinical trial, for example: when safety/efficacy of a new test treatment are unsure or untested, it is considered unethical to start treating large numbers of patients over a longer period of time, often in phase II or III, without adequate monitoring of what is actually happening to the exposed patients.
